Los Angeles County Physicians Endorse Senator Holly Mitchell for County Supervisor Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic
LOS ANGELES - The Committee of Interns and Residents of the Service Employee International Union (CIR/SEIU) announced their endorsement of Senator Holly Mitchell to represent the Second Supervisorial District on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. CIR/SEIU is a national union that represents over 17,000 resident physicians and medical professionals.
CIR/SEIU members are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis throughout Los Angeles County and many of them work in county run public hospitals. CIR/SEIU doctors trust Senator Mitchell's leadership experience to strengthen the public healthcare system in Los Angeles County - which is home to the largest public health department in the country.
“LA County’s safety net hospital system may never recover from the losses that are taking place during COVID-19. We need a Board of Supervisor that has the expertise in healthcare policy and budget analysis. As the chair of the budget committee in the legislature and longtime member of the health committee, our doctors believe that Senator Mitchell is the type of leader we need to get through and repair our system” Dr. Erica Barrios, Regional Vice President for CIR/SEIU and OBGYN Resident Physician at Harbor UCLA hospital.
In response to receiving CIR/SEIU's endorsement Senator Holly Mitchell shared "before COVID-19 we had a primary care physician shortage that has only worsened due to this pandemic. The resident physicians of CIR/SEIU are helping to meet the demand for doctors and medical professionals during this unprecedented time. I am honored to have the support of the over 17,000 members of CIR/SEIU who are on the frontlines helping to save lives and expand access to health care."
In Los Angeles County, CIR/SEIU represents over 2,000 members working in public and private hospitals. The Second Supervisorial District has two of the largest public hospitals with Harbor-UCLA and MLK Drew Hospital.
CIR/SEIU doctors choose Holly Mitchell to fight for their needs and to represent the best interest of their patients. Throughout the 10 years she has served in the state legislature, Sen. Mitchell has been on the Labor Committee and voted for better wages, protections and defined pensions for workers. This has earned her a 100% voting record with the California Labor Federation.
CIR/SEIU is the latest union to join the coalition of healthcare workers that stand with Holly Mitchell for County Supervisor. This includes; SEIU Local 2015, SEIU United Healthcare Workers, SEIU 121 Registered Nurses and the National Union of Healthcare Workers.
Senator Holly Mitchell is in the runoff for the open seat to represent the Second District on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. This race will be on the general election ballot in November.
