Holly Mitchell for Los Angeles County Supervisor Receives Powerful Trio of Environmental Justice Endorsements
LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, State Senator Holly Mitchell, candidate to represent the Second District on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors announced the endorsement of three leading environmental justice organizations: the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV), Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters (LALCV) and Sierra Club.
Senator Mitchell has championed environmental justice rights throughout her career. In 2014, she faced strong opposition from the gas and oil industry when she carried SB 1132, a bill to establish a moratorium on fracking. That did not stop her from continuously advocating for legislation that prohibits oil drilling in state waters (SB 834), increases investments in our natural ecosystem (SB30), and places California on track to 100% renewable energy by 2045 (SB 100).
In response to receiving the endorsement of three influential environmental justice groups, Holly Mitchell shared:
“Having worked closely with each of these organizations to create and pass legislation that protects our natural resources and the health of our communities, it is an honor to receive this level of support from the environmental justice community. We must continue to work together to meet the unique environmental needs of the Second Supervisorial District. This includes safeguarding neighborhoods that are near the largest oil field in the country, protecting the Ballona Wetlands, and expanding parks and green spaces to underserved communities. Achieving this, along with actualizing our bold vision of a Fossil Fuel Free LA County are a few of the key environmental justice priorities I am committed to achieving as a County Supervisor.”
The combined membership of the Sierra Club, LALCV and CLCV includes over 200,000 residents in Los Angeles County. The California League of Conservation Voters, which normally only focuses on state wide elections made an unprecedented endorsement in a county supervisorial race by supporting Holly Mitchell. CLCV Policy Director, Mike Young shared:
“The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is one of the most powerful elected body in the state due to the 10 million constituents and $33 billion operating budget that is shared among only five people. The significance of this government agency cannot be overlooked which is why CLCV has endorsed Holly Mitchell for County Supervisor. Her unwavering leadership in the state legislature on some of our toughest fights is needed in LA County, a county that can truly impact the state’s ability to achieve our ambitious and necessary environmental justice goals.”
LALCV is a community activist driven organization that works to support candidates in Los Angeles County with a strong, pro-active record of environmental justice. In announcing their endorsement, LALCV Board Member, Juan Munoz stated:
“We are excited to endorse Senator Mitchell because she is the type of environmental champion we need for the 2nd Supervisorial District. While in the state legislature she has introduced legislation that would have put a moratorium on fracking while it was further studied (SB1132). At the county level she is committed to establishing a 2,500-foot buffer zone between an active oil drilling site and homes/sensitive community sites. She wants to actualize the fossil fuel free goal in the LA County Sustainability Plan, push for more green spaces, and invest in our public transit system.”
Senator Mitchell has been one of the Sierra Club’s strongest allies on challenging the oil and gas industry. As a result, she has consistently received the Sierra Club’s endorsement for election, both for her election to the State Assembly and the State Senate. In announcing their endorsement, Sierra Club Los Angeles, Vice Chair, David Haake stated:
“The Sierra Club is proud to endorse State Senator Holly Mitchell for Los Angeles County Supervisor for her demonstrated leadership on the environment in the state legislature. Holly has been a true champion of environmental justice, an issue of particular concern to the residents of the 2nd District.”
Mitchell continues to receive support from a diverse coalition of organizations and leaders, including: RL Miller, Chair of the Environmental Caucus for the California Democratic Party, Governor Gavin Newsom, SEIU 2015, Black Women’s Democratic Club, United Farmworkers and many more.
