Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles County Action Fund Endorses Senator Holly Mitchell for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors District 2

LOS ANGELES, CA – State Senator Holly Mitchell, a proven leader in expanding access to affordable healthcare and proponent for women’s rights, adds LA County’s largest reproductive rights political action committee - Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles County Action Fund (PPAP) - to the growing coalition of organizations in support of her candidacy for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Senator Holly Mitchell’s experience in the state legislature in fighting against attacks to reproductive justice and policy wins that expand access to healthcare, has allowed for hundreds of thousands of LA County residents – who rely on Planned Parenthood and other Title X funded health care providers – to continue to receive the care they deserve and need. “PPAP is proud to endorse Senator Mitchell for the LA County Board of Supervisors. Senator Mitchell is a lifelong champion of reproductive health care and will bring her distinguished expertise and leadership to county residents” said Sue Dunlap, President of Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles County Action Fund.

As Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, Senator Mitchell worked with Governor Gavin Newsom to increase funding for reproductive healthcare to $100 million in the 2019-2020 state budget. This unprecedented investment by the state increases reimbursement rates for health centers across California. In Los Angeles County alone, the increased funding helps nearly 130 health centers.

Celinda Vázquez, Vice President of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles County Action Fund said, “Senator Holly Mitchell is a trailblazer for progress, quality healthcare and patient rights. We proudly stand with Senator Mitchell.”

Senator Mitchell has put forward progressive health care reforms that meet the day-to-day needs of District 2 residents and has expanded access to quality healthcare for our most vulnerable populations. In 2012, she authored Assembly Bill 2348, sponsored by Planned Parenthood, making it possible for the first time in California for registered nurses to dispense and administer birth control outlined by a patient's doctor.

This year, Mitchell co-authored The Reproductive Dignity for Incarcerated People Act, which aims to standardize prenatal care for incarcerated women in county jails and state prisons, a law that would impact the over 2,250 women who are part of Los Angeles County’s jail system. She also authored The Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act, which focuses on addressing the disproportionately high rates of maternal mortality rate among Black women in California.

In response to receiving the support of PPAP, Senator Holly Mitchell shared “I am honored to have the endorsement of Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles County Action Fund and will continue to fight for the right to quality and affordable healthcare for all Californians. We cannot play politics with people’s health. Our residents are looking to their elected leaders to protect the safety net that Los Angeles County provides as the one of the largest public health providers in the nation, and that is what I will remain committed to doing as a County Board Supervisor.”

Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles County Action Fund (PPAP) is an independent, non-partisan organization. Over 137,000 Angelenos look to PPAP for opportunities to amplify their voice and to take action. PPAP’s backing of progressive frontrunner, Senator Mitchell joins endorsements from Black Women Organized for Political Action Committee, Governor Gavin Newsom and advocacy groups that trust in Senator Mitchell’s ability to serve in the best interest of Los Angeles County residents.

State Senator Holly Mitchell represents nearly one million residents in California’s 30th District. Mitchell will be on the 2020 ballot for the open seat to represent the 2nd Supervisorial District on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
